I Can’t wait—Windows 8!

Since I’m peering into the Microsoft crystal ball, I might as well inform SOHOBE readers about the next version of the Windows operating system. CEO Steve Ballmer at a developer’s conference in May, casually made mention of a Windows 8 due out next year. News like that, of course, is anything but causally stated, and surprisingly, it seemed to catch the technology insiders off guard. There was even a bit of back peddling on Microsoft’s part after the announcement. But in short order, Microsoft embraced what might have been an off-the-cuff remark, and confirmed the statement. And they confirmed it in a big way by quickly posting a YouTube video showing a prototype of the OS. (more…)

Intune Tune Up

Recently, SOHOBE readers may have heard about a Windows Intune beta that is available. Intune, as many of my clients know, is a Microsoft Technology, which allows users to keep their Windows-based computers up-to-date. Intune combines Internet security software with a Windows update monitor. Sold as a monthly service, Intune also allows users to designate a Partner of Record for this service. If purchasers choose SOHOBE as the Partner of Record, the option allows me to “see” what the status of such updates and security is on these systems. (more…)

Office 365 Releases

Filed under: Microsoft,Office365,The Cloud — Michael Cabral @ 12:00 AM

Office 365, the highly anticipated cloud-based offering from Microsoft, has finally moved out of Beta and is now available to the general public. SOHOBE is very excited by what this new product brings to the SOHO market. If you’re one of the few who haven’t heard of Office 365, Microsoft has provided this concise description of the service:

Microsoft Office 365 is a set of web-enabled tools that combine Microsoft Office productivity with the latest Microsoft communication and collaboration technology. A month-to-month subscription of Office 365 can help you get where you want to go with your business, while keeping your life in balance.

While I can’t attest to Office 365′s effect on your business’ chakras, I do see this bringing an even more level playing field to SOHO businesses. Features once only available to the Enterprise, can now be gotten for a manageable monthly fee. But why not find out exactly what Office 365 is yourself? I’m very pleased to announce that SOHOBE is a Microsoft Cloud Partner of Record, and as the launch goes forward, SOHOBE can issue invitations to “test drive” the Office 365 system. Click the Cloud Power and use the comments section to request your invitation.

Exceptional Alert

Quite unintendedly, I have been posting something light and, I hope, humorous into the blog each month. I didn’t think that I would have anything like that for this posting. But, as if preordained, this literally popped up:

Exception Unknown Exception dialog box

Not only doesn’t Windows know what program caused the problem, but it allowed its exception to have an exception. I think. Thank you for sharing that with me, Windows.

Windows Live Mesh Goes Gold!

For the past year or so, some SOHOBE clients have been using the beta version of Microsoft Live Mesh. Live Mesh allows computers to synchronize files, and for users to remotely access their computers. Recently, Microsoft sent a notice that Live Mesh had completed its beta run. That caused a lot of confusion, and some clients believed that Microsoft Live Mesh is being discontinued immediately. Actually, that’s not quite correct, Live Mesh will continue to work until March 2011. The Microsoft message was trying to convey that Live Mesh had completed the beta portion of its run, and was now heading toward mainstream availability. (more…)
